How to Access Game Dashboard Feature on a Chromebook

Gaming on a Chromebook has improved significantly over the past few years. With support for Android games, cloud gaming services, and even some Linux titles, Chromebooks have become surprisingly capable gaming devices. To further enhance the experience, Google introduced the Game Dashboard feature in ChromeOS.

The Game Dashboard gives you quick access to useful tools while playing games. You can capture screenshots, record gameplay, manage controls, and optimize your gaming experience without leaving the game.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to access the Game Dashboard feature on a Chromebook and share some tips to help you get the most out of it.

What is Game Dashboard on Chromebook?

The Game Dashboard is a built-in gaming overlay in ChromeOS designed to improve your gameplay experience. It allows you to access useful gaming tools directly on the screen while a game is running.

With Game Dashboard, you can:

  1. Take screenshots while playing a game
  2. Record your gameplay
  3. Use screen capture tools instantly
  4. Enable game controls for keyboard or controller input

Instead of leaving the game or opening additional apps, everything is available in a quick overlay panel.

How to Access Game Dashboard on Chromebook

Before using the Game Dashboard, make sure your Chromebook meets a few basic requirements.

Your Chromebook should be running a recent version of ChromeOS, since the Game Dashboard feature is only available in newer updates. You’ll also need to ensure that the Google Play Store is enabled and that your Chromebook supports Android apps. Because the Game Dashboard primarily works with Android games, you should install games from the Google Play Store before trying to use the feature.

Once these requirements are met, you’re ready to access the Game Dashboard.

1. Open the Launcher on your Chromebook and start a game that you installed from the Google Play Store.

Open Roblox on Chromebook

2. Once the game launches, ChromeOS will automatically detect that a game is running. Look at the top of the screen, where you should see a small controller-shaped Game Dashboard icon. Clicking this icon will open the Game Dashboard overlay.

3. You can also press Search + G (or Launcher + G on newer Chromebook keyboards) to open the Game Dashboard instantly.

Once opened, the Game Dashboard overlay will appear on top of your game. This panel provides access to several useful gaming tools without interrupting your gameplay.

How to Use Game Dashboard Panel on Chromebook

The Game Dashboard overlay includes several features that help improve your gaming experience.

From the panel, you can access options such as:

  1. Screenshot – Capture an image of your gameplay instantly.
  2. Screen Recording – Record your gameplay sessions.
  3. Game Controls – Configure keyboard controls for touch-based games.
  4. Settings – Adjust dashboard preferences and options.

You can quickly toggle these features while the game is running, allowing you to customize your gameplay experience without leaving the game.

How to Use the Game Controls Feature

One of the most useful features inside the Game Dashboard is Game Controls.

Many Android games are designed primarily for touchscreens. If you prefer using a keyboard and mouse, ChromeOS allows you to map keyboard keys to on-screen controls.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Open the Game Dashboard while the game is running.

2. Click the Game Controls option in the dashboard, and select Set up.

3. Here, you will see an option to Create your first control. Click the Plus (+) icon to add a new control.

Remap Game Keys

4. Place the control over the on-screen button and assign a keyboard key or joystick input.

5. Click Done to save your control layout.

Assign a keyboard key

This feature makes many mobile games much easier to play on a Chromebook using a keyboard and mouse.

Game Dashboard Not Appearing

If you don’t see the Game Dashboard on your Chromebook, there are a few things you can check.

First, make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of ChromeOS, as older versions may not support this feature. You should also confirm that you are playing an Android game installed from the Google Play Store, since the Game Dashboard mainly works with Android apps.

Restarting your Chromebook can also help resolve temporary issues. If the feature still doesn’t appear, keep in mind that not all Chromebooks support the Game Dashboard feature. You can check this link to learn more about the Game Dashboard on Chromebook.
