How to Add and Remove User Accounts on Chromebook

A Chromebook is tightly integrated with your Google account. It works as your personalized computing device, allowing you to check emails, view photos, browse the internet, and access various Google services.

However, if you want to share your Chromebook with others, you might feel hesitant because anyone using your account can easily access your emails, photos, and browsing data.

To address this concern, Google includes a built-in feature on Chromebooks that allows you to add multiple user accounts. Each user can sign in with their own Google account and get a personalized experience. Chromebooks also include a Guest Mode, which lets someone use the device temporarily without accessing your personal data.

How to Add a New User Account on Chromebook

It is understandable to be cautious about sharing your Chromebook since it functions as your personal device for browsing the internet and accessing your Google services. If someone signs in using your account, they can access your emails, images, and browsing history due to its integration with your Google account.

Therefore, if you want to share your Chromebook with someone else, the best option is to create a separate user account for them.

Follow the steps below to add a new user to a Chromebook:

1. First, turn on your Chromebook and go to the login screen.

2. If you are already signed in, open the Quick Settings panel and click the Sign out button to return to the login screen.

If the person does not have a Google account, they can create one during this step. You can also follow our guide on how to create a Google account on a Chromebook.

Once the account is added, it will appear on the login screen. The user can select their account and enter their password to sign in and start using the Chromebook with their own personalized settings.

How to Switch Between Users on a Chromebook

To switch between users on your Chromebook, you first need to sign out of the currently logged-in account. Once you sign out, you will be taken to the login screen, where you can easily switch between different user accounts.

Follow these steps to switch users on a Chromebook:

1. Click on the Clock, Wi-Fi, and Battery icons in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel.

2. Click on the Power button, then select Sign out.

4. Click on the user profile you want to switch to.

5. Enter the password for that account to sign in.

After logging in, the Chromebook will switch to that user’s session, allowing them to continue their work.

How to Remove a User Account on a Chromebook

If multiple people use your Chromebook, you may have several user accounts added to the device. However, if an account is no longer needed, you can easily remove it from your Chromebook to keep the login screen organized and free of unused profiles.

Removing an account deletes all locally stored data associated with that user, including downloaded files, browser data, and settings stored on the device. The Google account itself will not be deleted, only the data stored on that Chromebook will be removed. It is recommended to back up any important files before removing the account from your Chromebook.

To do this, follow the steps below:

1. Click the Sign out button in the Quick Settings panel.

2. After that, locate the account you want to remove and click the down arrow next to it.

3. You will see the Remove account option. Click on it and confirm to remove the account.

Once you complete these steps, the selected user account will be removed from the device, and all locally saved data associated with that account on your Chromebook will be deleted.

Adding Users on a Chromebook

That’s it! This is how you can manage multiple user accounts on your Chromebook. It allows multiple people to share the same device while keeping their personal data, apps, and settings separate.

If you frequently share your Chromebook with family members or colleagues, using multiple user accounts is the best way to maintain privacy and keep the device organized.
