How to Change the Password on a Chromebook
Recommended: Use NordVPN on your Chromebook to stay secure online.

To unlock a Chromebook, we usually use the Google account password connected to the device. However, ChromeOS also allows you to set up a PIN or even create a separate local password for unlocking your Chromebook without typing your Google account password every time.

This can make signing in much faster while also giving you an additional layer of convenience. In this guide, we will show you how to change the password on a Chromebook, how to set up a PIN, and how to create a separate Chromebook password for the lock screen.

What You Should Know Before Changing the Password

Most Chromebooks use your Google account password as the primary sign-in method. That means when you change your Google password, it also changes the login password for your Chromebook.

However, ChromeOS also includes additional sign-in methods like:

  • PIN unlock
  • Local Chromebook password
  • Smart Lock with Android phone

These options let you unlock the Chromebook without constantly entering your full Google password.

Personally, I think the PIN option is one of the most useful ChromeOS features because typing a long Google password every single time can become annoying pretty quickly.

How to Change the Password on a Chromebook

If you want to change the Google account password used on your Chromebook, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open Google Account Settings

Open the Chrome browser and click on your profile icon in the top-right corner.

Now select Manage your Google Account.

You can also directly visit:

myaccount.google.com

Step 2: Open the Security Section

From the left sidebar, click on Security.

Scroll down to the How you sign in to Google section and click Password.

Google may ask you to verify your identity by entering the current password.

Step 3: Enter a New Password

Type your new password and confirm it again.

After that, click on Change Password.

Your Chromebook will now use the updated Google account password for signing in.

How to Set Up a PIN on Chromebook

ChromeOS allows you to unlock your Chromebook using a PIN instead of typing the entire Google password.

Step 1: Open the Settings App

Click on the time section in the bottom-right corner and open Settings.

Now go to Privacy and Security.

Step 2: Open Lock Screen and Sign-in

Look for the Lock Screen and Sign-in option and click on it.

Enter your existing Chromebook password when prompted.

Step 3: Set Up the PIN

Under the PIN section, you will either see:

  • Set up PIN
  • or Change PIN if a PIN already exists

Click on it.

Enter your preferred PIN and confirm it again.

Once completed, you can unlock the Chromebook using the PIN instead of your Google account password.

How to Set a Separate Chromebook Password

Newer versions of ChromeOS also allow some users to create a separate local password specifically for unlocking the Chromebook.

This means you can sign in to the lock screen using a different password instead of your Google account password.

Step 1: Open Lock Screen Settings

Open:

Settings > Privacy and Security > Lock Screen and Sign-in

Enter your current password.

Step 2: Set Up a Local Password

Look for the option to create or set up a Chromebook password.

Click Set up.

Now:

  1. Enter the new password
  2. Confirm the password
  3. Click on Confirm

After that, you can unlock the Chromebook using this password instead of entering your Google account password every time.

What Happens After Changing the Google Password?

If you change your Google account password from another device, ChromeOS may ask you to enter the old password once during the next login.

This helps the Chromebook decrypt locally stored files and synced data.

If you remember the old password, simply enter it and continue normally.

However, if you completely forgot the old password, you may need to reset the Chromebook using Powerwash.

How to Reset a Chromebook Using Powerwash

If password issues prevent you from logging in properly, you can reset the Chromebook.

Step 1: Open the Reset Menu

Press:

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R

A reset window will appear.

Step 2: Start Powerwash

Click Restart and select Powerwash.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset process.

After resetting, sign in again using your Google account.

Tips for Creating a Strong Password

Here are a few useful password tips for keeping your Chromebook secure:

  • Use at least 12 characters
  • Combine uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Add numbers and symbols
  • Avoid using common words or birthdays
  • Never reuse passwords across multiple websites
  • Enable two-factor authentication

Nowadays, your Google account usually stores emails, passwords, photos, bookmarks, and even payment information, so having a strong password is extremely important.

Wrapping Up

Changing the password on a Chromebook is fairly simple, and ChromeOS gives you multiple ways to secure the device. You can continue using your Google account password, set up a faster PIN unlock method, or even create a separate local Chromebook password for the lock screen.

For most users, setting up a PIN provides the best balance between convenience and security. However, if you prefer additional privacy, the separate Chromebook password feature can also be very useful.

Overall, ChromeOS keeps the process straightforward, and it only takes a few minutes to configure the sign-in method that works best for you.
