Google has released a number of features powered by its AI. Recently, we got Gemini pre-installed on Chromebooks. Now, another AI-powered tool from Google is showing up pre-installed on ChromeOS – NotebookLM.
Google has now pre-installed the PWA (Progressive Web App) version of NotebookLM on Chromebooks. It’s a powerful AI-powered research and writing assistant that works best with the sources you upload, including documents, articles, videos, and audio files.
Previously, I could only access it via notebooklm.google.com in the browser. But after updating my Chromebook to the Beta channel, I noticed NotebookLM was already pre-installed, clearly part of early testing. Now, it’s rolling out more widely and appears by default on the Stable channel as well.
NotebookLM is pre-installed by default on ChromeOS
After updating my Chromebook to the latest Stable build, I noticed that NotebookLM was already available in the app drawer. I’ve started using it instead of running it in the browser, and the experience feels much smoother.
If you haven’t tried NotebookLM yet, I definitely recommend giving it a shot. Since it’s a PWA, it opens in its own window and feels just like a native app. You can even pin it to your shelf for quick access, just like you would with Google Docs or Google Photos. It’s lightweight, fast, and fits nicely into the ChromeOS ecosystem.

If you don’t see NotebookLM on your device yet, make sure you’re running the latest version of ChromeOS. To check for updates, open Settings, go to About ChromeOS, and click Check for updates.
How to Get NotebookLM If You Don’t See It Yet
If NotebookLM doesn’t show up automatically, you can still install it manually in seconds:
1. Open the new App Store on your Chromebook.
2. Search for NotebookLM and select it from the search results.
3. Click on Install from Web to install it on your Chromebook.

NotebookLM is shaping up to be one of the most useful AI tools on Chromebooks, especially for students, researchers, writers, and anyone who works with a lot of information. And now that it’s pre-installed as a PWA, Google is making it easier than ever to dive into AI-powered productivity.
