If you’ve recently picked up a Chromebook or you’re just trying to figure out all the ways to install your favorite apps and games, you’re in the right place. ChromeOS has come a long way, and with the release of version 135 and above, Google introduced a new and much easier way to explore and install software: a built-in Apps & Games app.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through all the available options, including this new app store and some of the classic methods, so you can get the most out of your Chromebook.
Install Apps and Games on a Chromebook
In earlier versions of ChromeOS, we had the option to install Android apps and games using the Play Store. To do that, you needed to enable Google Play Services. There was also an option to install full desktop apps using the Linux Development Environment, and we already have a detailed guide on that, which you can follow by clicking the link.
Now, with the release of ChromeOS 135, Google has introduced a dedicated Apps & Games app for Chromebooks. This new store features a curated list of apps and games that are optimized specifically for Chromebooks.
Before diving into the new method, it’s important to update your device if you haven’t already. To do that, open Settings, click on About ChromeOS, and check for updates. If an update is available, install it and restart your device to apply the changes.
Once your Chromebook is updated, you’re ready to use the new Apps & Games feature.
1. Click the App Launcher and look for the Apps & Games app.

2. Open it, and you’ll find a clean, categorized interface where you can browse apps and games.
3. Browse or search for the app or game you want, then click on its tile.

4. You’ll see two options: Install from Web, which lets you use the PWA (Progressive Web App) version, and Get from Google Play, which installs the Android version of the app.
5. Choose the version you prefer, click Install, and follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: If you’ve opted for Extended Security Updates, you won’t be able to install Android apps through the hub, but you can still install the PWA (Progressive Web App) version of supported apps.
That’s it! Once the app or game is installed, it will appear in your launcher. However, if you don’t see the Apps & Games app in the app drawer, simply open the Explore app, where you’ll find the Apps & Games section listed in the sidebar.
Use the New Apps & Games App Store
With ChromeOS 135, Google introduced a new built-in app that makes installing apps and games super simple. It’s like a universal store that brings together different sources, including the Play Store and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), all in one place. While the new Apps & Games store is a great central hub, there are still several other methods available depending on your needs.
Currently, this store only supports installing PWAs and Android apps. If you want to install Linux apps or Chrome extensions, this method won’t work. However, we already have detailed guides on how to install both Chrome extensions and Linux apps on your Chromebook.
