If you use your Chromebook daily for browsing, writing, or those late-night research sessions, enabling Dark Mode in Google Chrome can make a noticeable difference. It helps reduce eye strain, gives the interface a cleaner look, and adds a more modern feel to your device. Once you switch to dark mode, everything simply feels easier on the eyes, especially in low-light environments.

In this guide, we’ll walk you step by step through how to enable Dark Mode in Google Chrome on your Chromebook. We’ll also show you how to force dark mode on websites, so your entire browsing experience feels consistent.

Enable Dark Mode in Google Chrome on a Chromebook

On a Chromebook, Google Chrome follows the system theme set in ChromeOS. That means when you enable Dark Mode at the system level, Chrome automatically switches to a dark interface. You don’t need to adjust anything separately inside the browser.

Dark Mode applies to the Chrome toolbar, tabs, address bar, and Settings page, along with the Launcher, Quick Settings panel, and other system menus.

However, websites themselves may not switch to dark mode unless they support it natively. If a website doesn’t offer a built-in dark theme, you can force dark mode for web content.

Now, let’s go ahead and enable complete dark mode for both the Chrome browser interface and the websites you visit.

1. Enable Dark Mode in Browser Interface

If you only want to change the appearance of the Chrome browser to a dark theme, you can do it directly from the Google Chrome settings. Here’s how you can enable it:

1. Launch Google Chrome on your Chromebook.

2. Click on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the browser window and select Settings from the dropdown menu.

Open Google Chrome Settings

3. In the left-hand panel, click on the Appearance tab.

4. Under the Mode option, click the dropdown menu and select Dark.

The Chrome interface will instantly switch to Dark Mode. This change applies to the tab bar, address bar, toolbar, and the Settings page. Websites that support built-in dark mode may also adjust automatically.

2. Enable Dark Mode for Websites in Chrome

Most websites do not automatically switch to Dark Mode unless they support it natively. If you want all websites to appear in dark mode, you’ll need to install an extension.

One of the most popular and reliable options is Dark Reader. Here’s how you can install it:

1. Open the Chrome browser and visit the Chrome Web Store.

2. In the search bar, type Dark Reader and open the extension page from the results.

Search for Dark Reader

3. Click on Add to Chrome, then select Add extension to confirm the installation.

4. Once installed, click the Dark Reader icon in the toolbar to customize brightness, contrast, and color settings according to your preference.

Configure Dark Reader Theme

After installation, most websites will automatically appear in Dark Mode, even if they don’t natively support it.

Force Dark Mode in Chrome

Enabling Dark Mode in the Google Chrome browser on your Chromebook is simple. Just open Settings, go to Appearance, and select Dark.

If you also want websites to display in dark mode, installing the Dark Reader extension is one of the easiest and most effective solutions.

For a complete dark experience across your entire Chromebook, you can enable system-wide Dark Mode in ChromeOS as well. And if you ever want to switch back, simply change the theme to Light or Device default in the Appearance settings and remove the extension from Chrome if needed.
