How to Fix CapCut Not Working on Chromebook

CapCut is one of the most popular video editing apps, especially if you create short-form content for platforms like TikTok or YouTube Shorts. However, if you’re using a Chromebook, you might occasionally run into issues where CapCut won’t open, crashes randomly, or simply doesn’t work as expected.

So what’s going on? ChromeOS handles Android apps and web apps (PWA) differently, which means CapCut can sometimes behave unpredictably depending on how you’re using it. In this guide, we’ll walk you through all the proven methods to fix CapCut on a Chromebook, step by step.

How to Fix CapCut Not Working on Chromebook

If CapCut isn’t working properly on your Chromebook, don’t worry – you’re not alone. These issues are fairly common, especially since ChromeOS runs Android apps in a separate environment, which can sometimes lead to compatibility glitches or performance hiccups.

In the sections below, we’ll go through a series of effective troubleshooting methods. We recommend following them in order, as they progress from basic fixes to more advanced solutions. By the end of this guide, you should be able to get CapCut running smoothly again on your device.

1. Restart Your Chromebook

This might sound basic, but it solves more issues than you’d expect. Restarting your Chromebook clears temporary glitches, refreshes system processes, and can fix minor app crashes.

1. Click on the time in the bottom-right corner to open Quick Settings.

2. Click the Power icon.

3. Select the Restart option from the menu.

Restart your Chromebook

After your Chromebook restarts, try using the CapCut video editor again. If the issue is fixed, you’re good to go. However, if you’re still facing problems, continue with the next method in this guide.

2. Update ChromeOS

Running an outdated version of ChromeOS can often lead to compatibility issues with Android apps like CapCut. That’s because ChromeOS doesn’t just update the system—it also updates the underlying Android environment that powers these apps. These updates typically include bug fixes, performance improvements, and better app compatibility.

So, if CapCut isn’t working as expected, updating your Chromebook is one of the easiest and most effective fixes. It can resolve hidden issues and ensure everything runs more smoothly.

Here’s how to update ChromeOS:

1. Click on the App Launcher and open Settings.

2. Navigate to About ChromeOS and click Check for updates.

3. If an update is available, install it. Once the update is complete, restart your Chromebook and try using CapCut again.

3. Update CapCut

Using an outdated version of CapCut can often lead to crashes, freezing, or performance issues. If you’ve installed the Android version of CapCut, you’ll need to update it through the Google Play Store. On the other hand, if you’re using the PWA (web version), it usually updates automatically when ChromeOS is updated.

Keeping CapCut up to date ensures better compatibility with ChromeOS and helps fix bugs that may be causing the issue.

Here’s how to update CapCut:

1. Open the Google Play Store.

2. Search for CapCut, then select it from the search results and click Update (if the option is available).

Once updated, try opening CapCut again to see if the issue has been resolved.

4. Clear CapCut Cache and Data

If CapCut opens but crashes or doesn’t load properly, clearing its cache and site data can often fix the issue. This process resets the app and removes stored data that might be causing problems. This method is especially useful if you’re using the PWA (web) version of CapCut.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Open the CapCut app.

2. Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select App info from the dropdown.

Open CapCut App Info

3. Go to Cookies and site data, then click Manage on-device site data.

4. Delete the cached data and cookies by clicking the delete icon, then click Done.

5. Once finished, click Reload to reopen the CapCut video editor.

After that, sign in to your CapCut account again, and you should be ready to start editing without issues.

5. Reinstall CapCut

If clearing the data doesn’t resolve the issue and you’re still experiencing problems, reinstalling the app can help fix corrupted files or broken components. To do this, you’ll first need to uninstall CapCut and then install it again.

Here’s how:

1. Click on the App Launcher, locate CapCut, right-click on it, and select Uninstall.

Uninstall CapCut

2. Open the Apps & Games app from the launcher.

Open App Store of Chromebook

3. In the search bar, type CapCut and select it from the results. You’ll see the available installation options, choose the version you prefer.

4. Click Install and wait for the installation to complete.

Once installed, CapCut will be ready to use. However, we recommend using the PWA (web) version of the app, as it generally works better and more smoothly on Chromebooks.

6. Use CapCut in Your Browser

If the app isn’t working smoothly, the web version of CapCut is often more stable and reliable. The good thing is that you can use CapCut directly in any browser, and since Chromebooks come with Chrome pre-installed, you can get started right away—no installation required.

Here’s how to use CapCut in your browser:

1. Open Google Chrome, visit capcut.com and click on Try CapCut Online.

2. Log in with your CapCut account, or sign up if you’re new.

3. You’ll now have access to the full-featured online video editor.

In many cases, the browser version performs better on Chromebooks and avoids the common issues found in the Android and PWA app.

Wrapping Up

CapCut is a resource-intensive app, so performance largely depends on your Chromebook’s hardware. If your device has 4GB of RAM or less, you may experience lag, crashes, or slow rendering. For a smoother experience, it’s recommended to use a Chromebook with at least 8GB of RAM.

That said, the methods above should help you fix most issues you might face with CapCut on a Chromebook. In many cases, simply updating ChromeOS, clearing app data, or switching to the web version can make a big difference.

If you’re still unable to use CapCut, especially if it was working before but suddenly stopped, it’s possible that access to the app is restricted in your region. In such cases, choose to use a VPN to bypass these restrictions and regain access.
