Microsoft 365 works surprisingly well on Chromebook, especially through the web apps and Android applications. You can use popular Microsoft apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive directly from your Chromebook without needing a Windows PC.

However, sometimes Microsoft 365 may stop working properly on ChromeOS. The apps may refuse to open, documents may fail to sync, login issues may appear, or the web version may keep crashing or freezing.

In some cases, the Android apps may not launch at all, while in others, Microsoft 365 webpages may get stuck on loading screens.

Fortunately, most Microsoft 365 issues on Chromebook can be fixed using a few simple troubleshooting methods.

In this guide, we are going to discuss all the working ways to fix Microsoft 365 not working on Chromebook.

How to Fix Microsoft 365 Not Working on Chromebook

There are several reasons why Microsoft 365 may stop functioning correctly on ChromeOS.

Some common causes include:

  • Outdated ChromeOS version
  • Corrupted browser cache
  • Internet connectivity issues
  • Expired Microsoft account sessions
  • Broken Android app data
  • Low storage space
  • Disabled permissions
  • Problematic browser extensions

Sometimes the issue appears after a ChromeOS update, while other times it may happen because the Microsoft apps themselves need updating. And occasionally, cloud syncing decides to take a vacation right when you need to finish an important document.

1. Restart Your Chromebook

Before trying advanced troubleshooting methods, restart your Chromebook.

A simple restart refreshes ChromeOS system services and can fix temporary glitches affecting Microsoft 365 apps or websites.

To restart your Chromebook:

  1. Click the clock area in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Click the Power icon.
  3. Restart the device.

Once the Chromebook boots back up, try opening Microsoft 365 again.

2. Check Your Internet Connection

Microsoft 365 depends heavily on a stable internet connection, especially when using the web apps.

If Word, Excel, Outlook, or OneDrive are not loading properly:

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon from the bottom-right corner.
  2. Ensure your Chromebook is connected to the internet.
  3. Try disconnecting and reconnecting to Wi-Fi.
  4. Restart your router if necessary.

You can also test another website to confirm whether the internet connection is working correctly.

If the issue is network-related, Microsoft 365 services may fail to load entirely.

3. Update ChromeOS

Outdated ChromeOS versions can sometimes cause compatibility issues with Microsoft 365 apps and services.

To update ChromeOS:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click About ChromeOS.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install any available updates.
  5. Restart the Chromebook.

After updating, try using Microsoft 365 again.

4. Update Microsoft 365 Android Apps

If you are using the Android versions of Microsoft apps, outdated app versions may cause crashes or loading problems.

To update the apps:

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Click your profile icon.
  3. Select Manage apps & device.
  4. Tap Updates available.
  5. Update all Microsoft apps including:
    • Word
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint
    • Outlook
    • OneDrive

After updating, relaunch the apps.

5. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies

If the web version of Microsoft 365 is not working properly, clearing browser data may help.

Corrupted cache files and cookies can interfere with Microsoft login sessions and document loading.

To clear Chrome cache:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Press:
Ctrl + Shift + Backspace
  1. Select All time from the Time range menu.
  2. Check:
    • Cookies and other site data
    • Cached images and files
  3. Click Clear data.

Restart Chrome and sign back into Microsoft 365.

6. Disable Problematic Chrome Extensions

Certain Chrome extensions may interfere with Microsoft 365 services.

Extensions related to:

  • Ad blocking
  • Privacy filtering
  • Script blocking
  • VPNs

can sometimes break Microsoft websites or login pages.

To disable extensions:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Visit:
chrome://extensions
  1. Disable all extensions temporarily.
  2. Restart Chrome.

Now test Microsoft 365 again.

If it starts working, one of the extensions was likely causing the problem.

7. Sign Out and Sign Back Into Your Microsoft Account

Account syncing issues can sometimes prevent Microsoft 365 from working correctly.

To refresh your session:

  1. Open Microsoft 365.
  2. Sign out of your Microsoft account.
  3. Restart Chrome.
  4. Sign back in again.

This can fix:

  • Sync problems
  • Authentication errors
  • Loading issues
  • OneDrive connection failures

8. Clear Microsoft App Data

If the Android apps are crashing or refusing to open, clearing app data may help.

To clear app data:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps.
  3. Select the Microsoft app causing issues.
  4. Click Storage & cache.
  5. Select:
    • Clear cache
    • Clear storage

Afterward, reopen the app and sign in again.

Keep in mind that clearing storage resets the app settings.

9. Reinstall Microsoft 365 Apps

If clearing the app data does not help, reinstalling the apps may fix corrupted installation files.

To reinstall Microsoft apps:

  1. Open the Launcher.
  2. Right-click the Microsoft app.
  3. Select Uninstall.
  4. Open the Google Play Store.
  5. Reinstall the app.

Once installed, sign back into your Microsoft account.

10. Check Storage Space

Low storage space can affect both ChromeOS and Microsoft apps.

To check available storage:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Device.
  3. Click Storage management.

Delete unnecessary:

  • Downloads
  • Android apps
  • Offline files
  • Linux files

Microsoft 365 apps usually work much better when the Chromebook has enough free storage available.

11. Reset Chrome Browser Settings

If Microsoft 365 web apps are still not working, resetting Chrome may help.

To reset Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Visit:
chrome://settings/reset
  1. Click Restore settings to their original defaults.
  2. Confirm the reset.

This restores Chrome settings without deleting bookmarks or passwords.

12. Powerwash Your Chromebook

If none of the troubleshooting methods work, the final solution is to Powerwash your Chromebook.

A Powerwash resets ChromeOS to factory settings and removes corrupted system files or settings that may be interfering with Microsoft 365.

Before proceeding:

  • Back up important files
  • Sync your Google account
  • Save Linux backups if necessary

To Powerwash your Chromebook:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Advanced.
  3. Select Reset settings.
  4. Click Powerwash.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

After setup, reinstall the Microsoft apps and sign in again.

This is usually the most effective solution for persistent ChromeOS-related issues.

Tips to Prevent Microsoft 365 Issues on Chromebook

Here are a few tips to keep Microsoft 365 running smoothly:

  • Keep ChromeOS updated
  • Update Microsoft apps regularly
  • Maintain free storage space
  • Clear browser cache occasionally
  • Avoid installing too many browser extensions
  • Restart your Chromebook regularly

ChromeOS and Microsoft 365 usually work quite well together, but things can become unstable when outdated apps, extensions, and cached data all decide to team up against you simultaneously.

Final Words

If Microsoft 365 is not working on your Chromebook, the issue is usually related to outdated ChromeOS versions, corrupted browser data, broken app files, or internet connectivity problems. Fortunately, most issues can be fixed by updating ChromeOS, clearing cache files, disabling extensions, or reinstalling the Microsoft apps.

In more serious cases, performing a Powerwash may be necessary to completely restore ChromeOS functionality.

Hopefully, one of the troubleshooting methods in this guide helped you fix Microsoft 365 issues on your Chromebook and get everything working properly again.
