How to Fix YouTube Not Working on Chromebook

If you’re having trouble using YouTube on your Chromebook, you’re not alone. Many users experience issues such as videos not playing, the page failing to load, or the app not working properly. Fortunately, most of these problems can be resolved with a few simple troubleshooting steps.

In this guide, we will walk you through several methods to fix YouTube not working on your Chromebook. Whether the YouTube website is not loading or the YouTube app is not functioning correctly, the solutions below can help you resolve the issue.

Fix YouTube Not Working on a Chromebook

Here are several methods you can try to get YouTube working again on your Chromebook. With that said, let’s dive into the troubleshooting methods.

1. Check the Network

The first thing you should check is your internet connection. A poor Wi-Fi connection can cause issues with YouTube, such as videos not loading or buffering endlessly.

Here’s how to check your Wi-Fi connection:

1. Click on the clock, wi-fi and battery icon located in the bottom-right corner of your Chromebook screen.

2. Click on the Wi-Fi option.

3. Ensure that your Wi-Fi is turned on and connected to the network.

If you’re having trouble with your Wi-Fi network, we already have a guide on troubleshooting network issues on Chromebook. After fixing any network issues, try opening YouTube again and see if it works.

2. Check YouTube Server Status

If the network is fine, the next step is to check if YouTube’s servers are down. Sometimes, YouTube experiences outages or server issues that prevent the app or website from working.

To check the server status:

1. Open the Google Chrome browser.

2. Visit websites like DownDetector for any updates on YouTube’s server status.

3. Search for YouTube and check the outages reports.

If YouTube is down, all you can do is wait for them to fix the issue on their end.

3. Clear Cookies and Site Data

If YouTube is still not working after checking your network and server status, the next troubleshooting step is to clear your cookies and site data. This can often resolve issues caused by corrupted or outdated data.

To clear cookies and site data, follow these steps:

1. Open the YouTube Application

2. Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome and select App Info.

3. Click on Cookies and Site Data and choose Manage On-Device Site Data.

4. Click on Delete to clear all on-device site data.

5. You can also delete data from embedded sites by selecting that option.

6. Click Done.

7. Once done, Reload the page and wait for the process to complete.

After clearing the data, try logging back into your YouTube account and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Reinstall YouTube App

If clearing the cookies and data didn’t help, the next step is to reinstall the YouTube app. This is a common fix for corrupted apps or app-specific glitches, as it refreshes the app and removes any potential software conflicts.

Reinstalling the app ensures that you’re using the most up-to-date version, which can help resolve issues like videos not loading, errors, or crashes.

To reinstall YouTube app:

1. Click on the App Launcher icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen and open Settings.

2. Go to Apps, then click on Manage Your Apps.

3. Find YouTube in the list of installed apps.

4. Select the app, then click Uninstall.

5. You’ll be prompted to delete browsing data, select the option and click Uninstall to confirm.

Uninstall YouTube

5. After uninstalling, open Google Chrome, go to youtube.com, and click the Install button in the address bar.

6. Once the app is reinstalled, try using YouTube again to see if the issue is fixed.

1. Click on the App Launcher icon and open Settings.

2. Scroll down and click on About ChromeOS.

3. Click Check for Updates.

5. Once the update is complete, restart your Chromebook and check if YouTube is working.

Conclusion

And that’s it! These are the methods you can follow to fix YouTube not working on your Chromebook. Whether the issue is with your Wi-Fi connection, YouTube servers, cookies, the YouTube app itself, or ChromeOS updates, following these troubleshooting steps should get you back to enjoying your favorite videos in no time.
