If you regularly switch between languages, maybe English for work, Hindi for messaging, or Japanese for studying, your Chromebook makes it incredibly easy to use multiple input methods.

Whether you want to type in another language, use a different keyboard layout, or enable transliteration (like typing Hindi using English letters), ChromeOS has everything built right in.

In this detailed guide, we’ll walk through how to add multiple input methods on your Chromebook, switch between them instantly, and customize everything for a smoother typing experience.

Add Multiple Input Methods on Chromebook

Adding multiple input methods allows you to type in different languages, use alternative keyboard layouts (US, UK, Dvorak, and more), and access special characters more easily. It also enables you to switch seamlessly between languages while working.

Here’s how you can add multiple input methods on your Chromebook.

1. Click on the clock area to open the Quick Settings panel. Then click the gear icon to open Settings.

Open Settings from Quick Panel

2. Once you’re inside Settings, look at the left sidebar and click on Device, then select Keyboard and inputs.

3. Next, click on Input settings, and then select Add input methods.

Add Input Methods Language

4. You will now see a list of available languages and keyboard layouts supported by ChromeOS. Search for the language you want to use; for example, Hindi, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, or any other supported language.

5. Click on the language, then click Add.

Add New Input Methods Language

Note: You can repeat this process to add as many input methods as you need. All of them can exist together, and you can switch between them anytime.

6. After adding a language, you’ll see the available keyboard layouts and input styles under Input methods. Enable your preferred input method by selecting it.

How to Customize Input Method Settings

Some input methods; such as English (US), Japanese, and others, include additional customization options. Here’s how you can adjust those settings:

1. Open Settings.

2. Go to Device, then select Keyboard and inputs.

3. Click on Input settings, then select the expand arrow next to the input method you want to customize.

Expand Input Settings

4. Here, you may find options such as auto-correction settings, word suggestions, keyboard layout adjustments, and on-screen keyboard settings. You can customize these options according to your preferences.

Keep in mind that the available options vary depending on the input method you choose.

How to Switch Between Input Methods on Chromebook

After adding multiple input methods, switching between them is quick and simple. There are two easy ways to do it: using a keyboard shortcut or using the Chromebook Shelf. Here’s how.

1. Use a Keyboard Shortcut

For faster switching, press Ctrl + Space.

This keyboard shortcut instantly cycles through your added input methods. If you switch languages frequently, this shortcut can save you a lot of time.

2. Use the Chromebook Shelf

When you add multiple input methods, ChromeOS gives you the option to show the input options on the Shelf. If this setting is enabled, you’ll see a language abbreviation (such as US, EN, or another language code) near the clock.

Here’s how to switch using the Shelf:

1. Click the language abbreviation near the clock.

2. A small menu will appear showing all the input methods you’ve added. Simply click the one you want to use, and it will switch instantly.

Both methods make it easy to move between languages and keyboard layouts while working on your Chromebook.

Adding multiple input methods on a Chromebook is a simple yet powerful feature. Once configured, switching between languages becomes seamless, fast, and efficient.
