If your Chromebook has suddenly stopped responding, frozen on a screen, or won’t react when you click, type, or use the touchpad, don’t panic. A non-responsive Chromebook is a fairly common problem, and in many cases, it’s something you can fix yourself in just a few minutes.

This can happen for several reasons. Maybe an app or browser tab has crashed and locked up the system. Maybe ChromeOS is struggling after a buggy update. In some cases, low system resources, corrupted files, or even a hardware issue can cause your Chromebook to become unresponsive.

The good news is that there are several ways to troubleshoot the problem, whether your Chromebook is completely frozen, stuck on a black screen, or just responding very slowly. In this guide, we’ll walk through the best fixes to get your Chromebook working again.

How to Fix a Frozen Chromebook

Before jumping into the fixes, wait a few minutes. Sometimes ChromeOS temporarily freezes while installing updates, processing background tasks, or recovering from a heavy workload. If you had multiple tabs, Android apps, or Linux apps open, the system may simply be overloaded.

If the system starts responding again after a short wait, you may have avoided a bigger issue. If not, follow the troubleshooting methods below to fix the problem.

1. Force Restart Your Chromebook

Force Restart Your Chromebook

If your Chromebook is completely frozen, the fastest and most effective fix is usually a force restart. Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds until the Chromebook shuts down completely. Wait a few seconds, then press the Power button again to turn it back on. In many cases, this simple step is enough to get ChromeOS responsive again.

A force restart reloads the system and can clear temporary glitches, crashed processes, or resource lockups causing the freeze. While this method works in most cases, keep in mind that any unsaved work may be lost, and any processes running in the background will be interrupted.

2. Hard Reset Your Chromebook

Hard Reset Your Chromebook

If you’re not able to restart your Chromebook normally, try performing a hard reset. Press Refresh + Power at the same time. This will immediately restart your Chromebook and force the system to reload. The Refresh key looks like a circular arrow and is usually located where the F2 key would be on a traditional laptop.

A hard reset can help if your Chromebook appears frozen but hasn’t fully shut down. It can also resolve issues caused by unresponsive hardware or temporary system faults that a normal restart may not fix.

3. Disconnect External Devices

External devices can sometimes cause startup freezes or create conflicts that make your Chromebook unresponsive. If you have anything connected, disconnect accessories like USB drives, external keyboards or mice, SD cards, docking stations, external monitors, or printers.

Once everything is unplugged, restart your Chromebook and check whether it responds normally. If the issue goes away, one of the connected devices or peripherals may be causing the problem.

4. Charge the Chromebook

Sometimes a Chromebook may appear frozen when the real issue is a drained battery or power problem. Plug in the charger and leave your Chromebook connected for at least 30 minutes, then try turning it on again.

While charging, also check whether the charging indicator light turns on, make sure the charger is securely connected, try a different power outlet, and if available, test with a different compatible USB-C charger. In some cases, a Chromebook can seem completely unresponsive when it has simply run out of power.

5. Close a Problematic Task

If your Chromebook is partially responsive but feels frozen or extremely slow, a misbehaving app, browser tab, or overloaded process may be causing the problem. In that case, you can use Chrome’s Task Manager to identify and close the task creating the issue.

1. Press Search + Esc to open Chrome’s Task Manager.

2. In the Task Manager window, review the list of running tabs, extensions, and background processes.

3. Look for any task using excessive memory or showing as unresponsive.

4. Select the problematic task, then click End process to force it to close.

This can often restore performance immediately without needing to restart your Chromebook.

6. Free Up Storage Space

A Chromebook with very little free storage can slow down dramatically or stop responding properly. If your device is running low on space, checking your storage usage and removing unnecessary files may help resolve freezing and performance issues.

1. Open Settings on your Chromebook.

Open Settings on Chromebook

2. Click System Preferences, then select Storage Management.

3. Review how much storage is currently in use and how much free space is available.

Manage System Storage on Chromebook

If your storage is nearly full, try deleting unwanted files, clearing out the Downloads folder, uninstalling unused apps, removing old Android apps, clearing browsing data, or deleting old Linux files if you use Linux on ChromeOS. You can also manage how much storage is allocated to Linux if needed.

Freeing up storage can often solve both freezing and performance problems. We have a detailed guide on how to free up storage on a Chromebook, which you can follow for more advanced cleanup steps.

7. Update ChromeOS

Sometimes a Chromebook may stop responding because of a bug or system issue that has already been fixed in a newer ChromeOS update. Checking for updates can help improve stability and resolve freezing problems.

1. Open Settings on your Chromebook.

2. Select About ChromeOS and click Check for updates.

Update Chrome OS

3. If an update is available, install it and wait for the process to complete.

4. Restart your Chromebook after the update finishes.

Running outdated software can cause stability problems, so keeping ChromeOS up to date is an important troubleshooting step.

8. Disable Problematic Extensions

Bad or poorly optimized Chrome extensions can sometimes make a Chromebook feel frozen, unstable, or unusually slow. If the problem started recently, an extension could be causing the issue.

1. Open Chrome on your Chromebook.

2. Type chrome://extensions into the address bar and press Enter.

3. Turn off your extensions one by one.

Disable Extensions on Chromebook

3. Restart Chromebook and test your Chromebook’s performance after disabling each one.

If the issue disappears after disabling a specific extension, you’ve likely found the culprit. Honestly, browser extensions cause more strange Chromebook problems than many people realize, especially if you have too many installed or one is misbehaving.

9. Powerwash Your Chromebook

If nothing else works, performing a Powerwash may fix deeper software corruption or persistent system issues that other troubleshooting steps haven’t resolved. A Powerwash resets your Chromebook to factory settings, which can often clear software-related problems. Since this process erases local data, make sure to back up important files before you begin.

1. Open Settings on your Chromebook.

2. Go to System Preferences, find the Reset section, and click Reset under the Powerwash option.

3. When the confirmation prompt appears, click Restart to begin the Powerwash process.

Restart your Device

4. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your Chromebook.

This restores ChromeOS to its factory state and can be one of the most effective ways to fix persistent software issues when nothing else works.

Wrapping Up

That’s it; these are the most effective troubleshooting methods you can use to fix a Chromebook that keeps freezing or stops responding. In most cases, one of these solutions should help get your device working again, whether the issue is caused by a temporary system glitch, low storage, problematic apps, or software-related bugs.

If your Chromebook still freezes after trying everything in this guide, the problem may be hardware-related and worth looking into further. At that point, it may be a good idea to contact your Chromebook manufacturer or have the device checked by a repair technician.
