If you’ve recently bought a new Chromebook and are unsure how to set it up, you can follow this guide from start to finish. We’ll walk you through the entire process of setting up a new Chromebook right out of the box in just a few minutes.
A Chromebook is a powerful device that runs on ChromeOS, an operating system developed by Google. To use a Chromebook, you’ll need a Google account so you can sign in and sync your apps, settings, and files.
Google also offers several perks for Chromebook users, including free trials and special offers for select apps and services. If you haven’t claimed them yet, you can check out our guide on how to claim your Chromebook perks.
How to Set Up Your New Chromebook
Before we begin, make sure your Chromebook has enough battery power. If the battery is low, it’s a good idea to plug it into a power outlet before starting the setup process.
You should also ensure that you have a Google account ready. If you don’t have one yet, you can easily create a new account during the setup process. In addition, make sure you have access to a stable Wi-Fi network, as an internet connection is required to complete the setup.
Once everything is ready, follow the steps below to get your new Chromebook up and running in no time.
1. Power on your Chromebook.
2. When your Chromebook boots up for the first time, you will see a window that says, “Welcome to your Chromebox or Chromebook.” Click on the Get Started button to begin configuring your Chromebook.
Note: If you want to change the language or accessibility settings, you can do so by selecting the available options on this screen.

3. Next, you need to connect your Chromebook to a network. Select the Wi-Fi network name, enter the network password, and connect to the network.

4. Read the Google Terms of Service, then click the Accept and Continue button.

5. On the next screen, sign in with your Google account.
6. Enter the email address and password associated with your Google account.

7. Once you sign in, a window may appear that walks you through installing the Google Play Store on your Chromebook, provided your device supports it.
8. Accept the Google Play Terms of Service by clicking the Accept button.

9. After completing these steps, create a password and PIN for your Chromebook. Then click Get Started, and you will see the Welcome screen.
10. After that, your Chromebook is now ready to use.

That concludes the initial setup of your Chromebook. However, there are still several additional options and settings you can explore, such as updating ChromeOS and your Android apps. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with guides to help you through those as well.
Update your Chromebook
After configuring your Chromebook, there are a few additional things you should do, such as updating your Chromebook to the latest version of ChromeOS and updating your Android apps. Let’s go through them one by one.
1. Update ChromeOS
Out of the box, Chromebooks may not always come with the latest version of ChromeOS installed. To ensure you have the most recent features, performance improvements, and security updates, you should manually check for updates.
To update ChromeOS, follow the steps below:
1. Click on the App Launcher icon and open the Settings application.
2. Select the About ChromeOS tab from the left panel.
3. Click the Check for updates button to look for the latest ChromeOS and security updates.

4. If a new update is available, it will automatically download and install on your Chromebook.
5. Once the update process is complete, click Restart to finish installing the update and wait for the reboot process to complete.
2. Update Android Apps
Chromebooks often come with several Android apps pre-installed. These apps also need to be updated regularly to ensure they run smoothly and securely.
Follow the steps below to update your Android apps if they are not updating automatically:
1. Click the App Launcher icon and open the Google Play Store.
2. In the Play Store, click on your profile icon, then select Manage apps & device.
3. Open the Manage tab and click Check for updates to download and install any available updates.

After updating your apps, you can also install new ones. Simply return to the Google Play Store, type the name of the app you want in the search bar at the top, and install it. The app will then be added to your ChromeOS launcher.
That’s it! You have successfully set up your new Chromebook. Now you’re ready to start using it. However, if you also want to install and run Linux applications on your Chromebook, you can enable the Linux development environment. To do that, follow the linked guide.
