Recommended: Use NordVPN on your Chromebook to stay secure online.

If you’re using a Chromebook, Google Photos is usually preinstalled and ready to go. But in some cases, especially on older models or school-managed devices, it might not show up by default.

No worries, though. If you want quick access to your photos and videos stored in the cloud, you can still install and use Google Photos on your Chromebook in just a few steps.

In case you’re new to it, Google Photos is a cloud-based photo and video storage service by Google. It automatically backs up media from your phone, tablet, or computer and lets you access everything from any device with an internet connection. It’s smart, fast, and helps keep your memories organized.

Installing Google Photos on Chromebook

Whether you prefer using it in your browser, installing it as a Progressive Web App (PWA), or downloading the full Android version, we’ve got you covered.

So, let’s dive right in.

1. Install Google Photos Using Chrome

If you’re looking for quick and easy access to your Google Photos, the Chrome browser is all you need. You can open Google Photos directly in Chrome and start using it, no installation required. But if you’d rather have it feel like a standalone app, you can install the Progressive Web App (PWA) version right from the browser. It’s fast, lightweight, and works just like a native app.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Open the Google Chrome browser on your Chromebook.

2. Go to photos.google.com and sign in with your Google account if needed. You can now view and manage all your photos directly from your browser.

3. To install the PWA version, look for the download icon on the right side of the address bar, click on it, and then select Install.

4. Google Photos will now be installed as an app on your Chromebook and can be launched from your app launcher.

2. Install Google Photos Using the App Mall

If you’re using ChromeOS 135 or above, there’s a new and easier way to find apps optimized for Chromebooks – all your installation options in one place, including both the Android and PWA versions. However, to use this method, you’ll need to update your Chromebook and enable Google Play to install the Android version of the app.

Once that’s done, follow these steps to install Google Photos on your Chromebook:

1. Open the App Launcher and launch the Apps & Games app.

2. In the search bar, type Google Photos and select it from the results.

3. You’ll see two installation options: Install from Web for the PWA version and Get from Google Play for the Android version.

4. Pick the version that fits your needs, click Install, and wait for the process to complete.

Note: If you prefer, you can also install the Android version directly from the Google Play Store.

Once installed, pin Google Photos to your Chromebook’s shelf for quick access. Just open the App Launcher, find Google Photos, right-click the icon, and select Pin to shelf. That way, your photos are always just a click away.

And that’s a wrap! These are the different ways you can use Google Photos on your Chromebook. If you just want quick access, you can open it right from the Chrome browser – no installation needed. But if you’re looking for a more app-like experience, you’ve got options: install the PWA version or go with the full Android app.

Pick the version that works best for you, and you’re all set to enjoy Google Photos on your Chromebook.
