On a Chromebook, Google Chrome is the default browser, but if you prefer browsing with Microsoft Edge, you can do that as well. With the latest version of ChromeOS, Microsoft Edge is officially available through the Google Play Store, allowing you to install it just like any other Android app. However, you will not get the full desktop experience with this version.

For the full desktop experience, you can install Microsoft Edge on your Chromebook using the Linux Development Environment, provided your device supports it and you have the Linux enabled.

Install Microsoft Edge Using Play Store

Microsoft Edge can now be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store on supported Chromebooks. To do this, you need to update your Chromebook to the latest version of ChromeOS.

After that, follow these steps:

1. Open the Google Play Store from the Launcher.

2. Search for Microsoft Edge.

3. Click Install.

Once installed, open Edge from the Launcher and start browsing. This removes the need for Linux installation unless you specifically want the Linux version.

Install Microsoft Edge on a Chromebook

Officially, there isn’t a version of Microsoft Edge specifically made for ChromeOS. However, if your Chromebook supports the Linux Development Environment, you can install the Linux version of Edge. This method is useful if you prefer the desktop-style Linux build.

To do this, you’ll first need to make sure your Chromebook is updated to the latest version of ChromeOS and that Linux is enabled.

Once that’s done, follow these steps:

1. Click on the Launcher icon and open Settings.

2. In the left-hand menu, scroll down and click on About ChromeOS. Then, look for Linux Development Environment and click Set up. You can also follow our detailed guide on how to enable Linux on your Chromebook.

Note: If you want quick access, right-click on the Edge icon and select Pin to Shelf. This will add a shortcut to the Chromebook Shelf, allowing you to quickly launch the Microsoft Edge browser.

Use Microsoft Edge on Your Chromebook

Once installed, whether via the Play Store or Linux, you can use Microsoft Edge alongside Google Chrome without issues. The Android version works normally, just like on any mobile device. The Linux version runs inside the Linux container, so it cannot be set as your default browser, but it works well for most tasks.

Still, it’s a great alternative for those who prefer using it. You can also install other Linux-based browsers like Firefox and Opera – check out our article on the best Linux apps for Chromebooks to learn how to get those installed as well.
