If you often work late at night or in low-light environments, turning on the keyboard backlight on your Chromebook can make a huge difference. The good news is that on most modern Chromebooks, enabling the keyboard light takes just a few seconds, once you know where to look.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to turn on the keyboard backlight on your Chromebook, adjust its brightness, and troubleshoot common issues if it’s not working.

Turn On the Keyboard Backlight on a Chromebook

Before we get started, make sure your Chromebook actually supports a backlit keyboard. Not all models include this feature, especially budget devices. Typically, mid-range and premium Chromebooks, including many Chromebook Plus models from brands like HP, Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo offer keyboard backlighting.

If you see a small light icon printed on one of the top-row keys, that’s usually a good indication that your device supports it. If you’re still unsure, check your Chromebook’s specifications on the manufacturer’s official website to confirm.

Now, let’s take a look at how to enable the keyboard backlight on your Chromebook.

1. Using Keyboard Shortcut

On most Chromebooks, the keyboard backlight is controlled using a simple keyboard shortcut. You should see a key with a small light icon at the top row of your keyboard. This key allows you to turn the backlight on, increase its brightness, or decrease it.

To turn on and adjust the keyboard backlight, follow these steps:

1. Press Alt + Brightness Up (the key with the light icon) to turn on the keyboard backlight.

2. To increase the brightness, press Alt + Brightness Up again until you reach your desired level.

3. To decrease the brightness, press Alt + Brightness Down key.

As soon as you press the shortcut, the keyboard backlight should respond instantly. If nothing happens, your Chromebook may not support a backlit keyboard, or the feature could be disabled in settings.

2. Using ChromeOS Settings

You can also enable and adjust the keyboard backlight brightness using the ChromeOS settings. Here’s how:

1. Open Settings.

2. Click on the Device option and select Keyboard and inputs.

3. Look for the option called Keyboard backlight brightness, then use the slider to turn on the keyboard light. You can move the slider to increase or decrease the brightness depending on your preference.

This method is especially useful if you prefer adjusting the brightness visually instead of using keyboard shortcuts.

Customize RGB Keyboard Lighting on Gaming Chromebooks

Some of the more powerful Chromebooks especially ones designed for gaming include RGB backlighting. This means you’re not limited to plain white lighting: you can choose from millions of colors, lighting effects, zones, and more. Recently, several manufacturers released new gaming-edition Chromebooks. Here’s how you can enable and customize RGB keyboard lighting:

1. Click on the clock, Wi-Fi, and battery icons, then click on the gear icon to open Settings.

Open ChromeOS Settings using the Quick Settings Panel

2. Click on Wallpaper and Style, then select the Set your wallpaper & style option.

3. Here, navigate to Keyboard backlight. Choose a color from the available options, and the selected color will immediately apply to your keyboard.

4. If your Chromebook supports multi-zone RGB lighting, click on the Customize button to adjust individual zones and create your own color combination.

That’s it! This is how you can turn on and customize RGB keyboard lighting on a gaming Chromebook. Keep in mind that keyboard backlighting, especially RGB effects at higher brightness levels does consume additional battery power. If battery life is important, consider lowering the brightness or turning off the lighting when it’s not needed.
