How to Optimize Chromebook Performance

Chromebooks have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity, speed, and affordability. However, with prolonged use or when running resource-intensive applications, users might experience a slowdown in their Chromebook performance. Don’t worry though, this blog will guide you through some effective strategies to optimize your Chromebook’s performance and keep it running smoothly.

While Chromebooks rarely slow down over time, if your Chrome OS device is not performing well, you can try to improve its performance and fix the issue in several ways.

Why Is My Chromebook So Slow?

If your Chromebook seems to be lagging or running slower than usual, various factors could be contributing to this performance issue.

One common culprit is having installed too many applications on your Chromebook or having too many open tabs. While Chromebooks are designed to handle multiple tasks efficiently, an excessive number can strain system resources.

Additionally, it is also important to keep your Chrome OS up-to-date, as this is crucial for optimal performance. Regularly check for system updates, as newer versions often include enhancements and optimizations that can address potential slowdowns. Now, let’s discuss how we can fix the Chromebook so slow issue.

How to Optimize Your Chromebook Performance

We know some of the common reasons why your Chromebook might be so slow. Let’s look into the methods that can optimize your Chromebook’s performance and make your Chromebook smooth again.

1. Uninstall Unnecessary Apps and Extensions

If you’ve noticed your system slowing down, one effective way to optimize its performance is by uninstalling unnecessary apps and extensions. Over time, the accumulation of applications and extensions can consume valuable system resources, leading to sluggish performance.

Here are the steps you can follow to uninstall them:

1. Click on the App Launcher icon and open the app drawer.

2. Here, look for the unnecessary apps that you no longer use.

3. Right-click on the app and a context menu will appear. Select the Uninstall button. When you uninstall it, it will free up some of the system resources.

Note: You can use the same steps to uninstall Linux applications. However, you will need to navigate to the Linux Apps folder in your App Drawer to uninstall them.

4. To uninstall extensions from your Chromebook, open the Google Chrome browser and visit: chrome://extensions. Here you will find all the extensions installed on your Chrome.

5. To remove an extension, click on the Remove button. A pop-up window will appear; click the Remove button again to confirm your action.

2. Clear Your Cache

Over time, your Chromebook can slow down due to the accumulation of cached data that can negatively impact browsing speed and system performance. The cache stores temporary data from websites to enable faster page loading when you revisit them. However, some of these cached files can cause issues. Therefore, clearing your cache can significantly improve your Chromebook’s performance.

Here’s how you can delete your browser caches on your Chromebook:

1. Open the Google Chrome browser.

2. After that, press Ctrl + H to open the History option.

3. Now, to delete the browsing data from your Chromebook, click on the Clear Browsing Data tab.

Note: You can also clear caches using the ChromeOS keyboard shortcut. Open the Google Chrome browser and press Ctrl + Shift + Backspace, then click on the Clear Data button.

3. Free up Chromebook Storage

If your Chromebook is running low on storage, it can affect its overall performance. Taking steps to free up storage space can enhance the device’s speed and responsiveness.

Here are some simple yet effective methods:

1. Open the Files app.

2. Now, navigate to files and folders that you no longer need. Right-click on them and select the Move to Trash option.

3. When you delete files, they do not get removed from your device; instead, they are moved to the Trash. To completely delete the files, you have to empty the trash. Click on the Trash tab and then click on the Empty Trash Now button. Alternatively, wait for 30 days, and the files will be deleted automatically.

4. If you have installed the Linux development environment on your Chromebook, you have allocated some of your disk space. If you are running out of space, you can reduce it.

5. For that, open the Files app, click on the three-dot icon, and at the bottom, you will see the available disk space; click on it.

By following the above steps, you can ensure that there are no issues related to storage, which can also lead to slow performance on your Chromebook.

4. End Process Using Task Manager

To identify and manage running processes on your Chromebook that are causing performance issues, you can end the processes. For this, you can use the built-in Task Manager.

Follow these steps to access it:

1. Press the Search + Esc shortcut to open the Task Manager.

2. Here, you can click on Memory footprint and check which apps and extensions are eating up the most RAM. Similarly, you can click on the CPU, Network, and find the culprit apps that are hogging resources.

3. Once you found the app, click on the task name and click on the End process button at the bottom right to terminate the process.

If you’re experiencing performance issues on your Chromebook while browsing the web, enabling Memory and Battery Saver can be an effective way to optimize system resources. Follow these steps to turn on these features:

1. Open the Google Chrome.

2. Click the three-dot menu and hover over the More Tools menu option.

3. Then, click on the Performance option.

1. Open the Google Chrome browser.

2. Click the three-dot menu, click on the More Tools option, and click on the Performance option.

3. After that, scroll down to the Speed section and turn on the toggle next to Preload Pages.

7. Check for ChromeOS Update

Sometimes, the issues you’re facing may be due to an outdated Chrome OS version. Google regularly releases Chrome OS updates that ensure you receive feature updates, security fixes, bug fixes, and more. These updates will ensure optimal performance on your Chromebook.

Here’s how you can update Chrome OS:

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Click on the About ChromeOS tab.

8. Powerwash your Chromebook

If you’ve tried various optimizations and your Chromebook is still not performing as expected, Powerwashing can be a solution. Powerwashing is essentially a factory reset that removes all locally stored data and resets your Chromebook to its original state. This can help resolve persistent issues and improve overall performance.

Here’s how you can Powerwash your Chromebook:

1. Open the Chromebook Settings.

2. Here, click on the System Preferences option on the right pane.

Conclusion

Over time, unnecessary apps, extensions, and accumulated cached data can slow down your Chromebook and reduce its overall responsiveness. Removing unused apps and extensions, clearing your browser cache, and keeping ChromeOS updated are some of the easiest and most effective ways to improve performance.

These steps help free up valuable system resources and ensure your device runs more efficiently. By addressing these factors and regularly checking for updates, you can significantly improve your Chromebook’s speed and responsiveness, resulting in a smoother and more reliable computing experience.
